Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness.  It is defined as an irregular mood behavior.  The patient may show outbursts of elevated or euphoric behavior for no reason. This is called manic bipolar disorder.  Manic depression was an earlier term used for this disorder, but it is now known as bipolar disorder. A patient would behave overly enthusiastic and particular about performing a task which was totally unnecessary at the moment.  He would become unreasonable and insist that the task be done and become very irritated.  This kind of outburst would have far reaching effects both on his life and his health.
The main feature of bi-polar symptoms is the occurrence of frequent mood swings. These mood swings can occur over a period of time and generally one mood episode lasts from a few days to a month. The bi-polar symptoms differ in accordance with the state that the person is experiencing. According to the American Psychiatric Association, the bi-polar symptoms consist of the occurrence of a manic state and a mixed episode followed by a depression episode. There are several characteristic features and bi-polar symptoms associated with each of these states.

The condition can be a lifelong one filled with varying states of highs and lows and treatment of the bipolar disorder differ from person to person. The earlier it is diagnosed by a mental health professional, the better the chances for recovery and staying well.
