Loved One With Bipolar Disorder? |
Zyprexa
Zyprexa is a drug manufactured by Eli Lilly used to treat people with acute Bipolar Mania, Schizophrenia, and mania, as well as maintenance in helping with Bipolar Disorder. Although experts still have questions as far as how Zyprexa works within the body, it is strongly believed that chemical imbalances in the brain are adjusted. With this correction, the drug is able to restore normal mood and thought process. As with many drugs used for treating mental illness, Zyprexa must be taken for several weeks before the full effects are known. Chemically known as olanzapine, this drug is available in four different forms. In addition, doctors will prescribe this medication in dosages to include 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg. Taken daily, most people who take Zyprexa handle it quite well. This drug, unlike many of the anticonvulsant drugs taken for mental illness, does not require levels to be monitored through blood samples. When taken on schedule as prescribed by the doctor, this antipsychotic medication helps to adjust chemicals within the brain, create a more even keel so stress can be handled far more effectively, make symptoms of mental illness easier to handle. Side effects associated with Zyprexa are generally mild and would include drowsiness, constipation, increased appetite, upset stomach, mild tremor, dry mouth, and weakness. Although not commonly reported, some patients have experienced seizures. Therefore, any person with a history of seizures should notify his or her doctor prior to taking this medication.
