Zoloft
Zoloft, manufactured by Pfizer is also known as Sertraline HCI. Used to treat people with depression, Zoloft has helped improve the lives of millions who live with mental illness such as Bipolar Disorder. Typically, a doctor will prescribe Zoloft in 50mg for depression to be taken once daily, increasing the levels to 200mg a day maximum, depending on the severity of the depression. For panic disorders, the standard beginning dose is 25mg daily also increasing to a maximum of 200mg and for obsessive compulsive disorder, 50mg at first, increasing to 200mg maximum. Zoloft is presumed to inhibit neuronal reuptake of serotonin within the brain although its effects on dopamine and norepinephrine neuronal reuptake is minimal. The results of a person with Bipolar or depression caused by some other type of illness taking Zoloft is positive. Generally, this drug takes about two weeks to reach optimal levels within the bloodstream. While people do not feel a euphoric sensation, they do begin to notice that they no longer get as upset or "blue" as they did without taking the Zoloft. The risk of serious side effect when taking Zoloft is very low. However, in a very, small number of patients studies, hypomania or mania did occur. Less serious side effects included an impairment to make good judgment, slowed motor skilled, diarrhea, male sexual dysfunction, nausea, tremor, insomnia, sweating, somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth, and increased sweating. Even with some minor risk, the overall benefit of this drug has been substantial. Back to Drug List |
