Wellbutrin
Wellbutrin is a fairly, new antidepressant drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. The primary goal of using this drug is to relieve some types of major depression such as Bipolar and Schizophrenia. Unlike other types of drugs used for treating depression such as Tofranil and Elavil, patients often experience a stimulating effect. Regardless, the benefits have shown very beneficial for treating the manifestations of depression that include low energy, insomnia, low sex drive, difficulty with concentration, and suicidal thoughts. Wellbutrin is known generically as Bupropion hydrochloride and can be found branded as Wellbutrin SR. While a small number of people taking Wellbutrin will gain weight, more commonly the situation involves weight loss. When taking this medication, it is important to work closely with a doctor and follow the prescribed dosage exact. Side effects are difficult to pinpoint since they can intensify or change altogether as time passes. For this reason, the doctor would need to monitor the administration of Wellbutrin. However, the greatest side effect risk is seizures. Less serious problems would include anxiety, abdominal pain, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, constipation, vomiting, sore throat, tremor, and rash. People who have kidney disease or heart trouble should inform their doctor prior to taking Wellbutrin and even then, it must be taken with caution. The doctor may choose to prescribe the drug in a low dose and then monitor carefully. In addition, people who have had or now have an eating disorder are at a much higher risk of seizure, therefore avoiding this drug. However, when used to treat depression, people have shown significant improvement. Back to Drug List |
