Trileptal
A product of Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Trileptal is most commonly used in treating the onset of seizures. However, this drug has many other important uses such as treating patients with neuropathic pain associated with diabetes, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, and shingles, as well as a mood stabilizer for people with mental illness to include Bipolar. Also known as, Oxcarbazepine, the chemical structure of Trileptal is very close to that of Tegretol. Trileptal is also a preferred drug by doctors because of the low risk of side effects. This medication is available in both liquid and tablet form and currently, Novartis is working with the Food and Drug Association in the development and approval of an intravenous form. While more studies are underway, experts believe Trileptal works by blocking out voltage-gated, sodium channels. In addition, while Tegritol can cause neutropenia, Trileptal does not. In addition, this drug has a fewer risk of causing any type of liver function abnormality. While the benefits are high, Trileptal does have some slight risks and side effects. For women on birth control pills, the metabolism of the estrogen component is increased. Therefore, when treating women on birth control, the lowest dose should be prescribed. Additionally, Trileptal can reduce the sodium level within the blood so doctors will watch for any signs of trouble. Other minor side effects associated with Trileptal include sleepiness, double vision, fatigue, tremor, abdominal pain, awkward gait, nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, although these have only been reported in 5% of people taking this drug.
