Topamax
Topamax falls within the anticonvulsant category although it is often used to manage migraines. Topamax is manufactured by Ortho-McNeil and is known by the brand name of Epitomax and the generic name of Topiramate. Sold in capsule form, this particular medication may be used as a stand-alone solution for people suffering from the effects of migraines or coupled with other medications for treating seizures and depression associated with Bipolar Disorder. Taken daily Topamax works as a preventive drug, meaning rather than providing pain and/or stress relief after the onset, the drug would be taken prior to any signs of problems to help alleviate them. Even so, it is important to understand that the usefulness of Topamax for acute treatment of migraines has not yet been studied. However, it has been proven in a number of closely watched clinical trials with excellent results. The administration of Topamax must be carefully guarded by doctors in that serious risks exist. For example, a person can experience increased eye pressure, elevated body temperature and decreased sweating, sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, anxiety, concentration difficulties, and kidney stones. Some of the more common problems include fatigue, slow thinking, and difficulty with memory, weight loss, and aggressiveness, loss of appetite, nervousness, double vision, and problems with coordination. To ensure the correct levels of Topamax are maintained within the body and not changing levels of electrolytes, doctors will take frequent blood samples. Back to Drug List |
