Risperdal
Risperdal is a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Bipolar or for acute to mixed or manic episodes associated with Bipolar. The benefit of Risperdal is that it can be administered as a stand-alone drug or in connection with other mood stabilizers. Illness such as Bipolar involves chemical imbalances of the brain known as serotonin and dopamine. While experts are not sure exactly how Risperdal relieves symptoms, what is known is that it does. Manufactured by Janssen-Ortho, this drug can work within three days for some patients although the optimal benefits are generally experienced within two to three weeks. The chemical name for Risperdal is risperidone and while a cure, it is certainly helpful in controlling the symptoms associated with depression and other mental illness. When compared to other mood stabilizers such as Lithium and Depakote, Risperdal has shown marked improvement. This antipsychotic agent is usually administered as 1 to 2mg a day although over time and depending on the severity of the problem, doctors will boost the dose up to 4 to 6mg a day. As with other antipsychotic drugs, it is important to understand some conditions do pose a risk. These would include Parkinson's, cardiovascular disease, and renal or hepatic disease. In most cases, patients on Risperdal experience few side effects but on occasion, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, headache, weight gain, hypotension, seizure, amenorrhea, menorrhagia, and ejaculatory and erectile dysfunction can occur.
