Loved One With Bipolar Disorder? |
Lithobid
Lithobid is a brand name for Lithium, which is an antipsychotic, antimanic medication typically used for various types of mental illness such as Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and Mania. Other common names include Eskalith, Eskalith CR, Lithane, Lithonate, and Lithotabs. With Lithobid, socium transport in the nerve and muscle cells is altered, which effects a change toward intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines. Patients administered Lithobid generally experience the elimination or decrease of intensity of subsequent episodes, specifically for people who have a history of depression and mania. In most cases, Lithobid should not be administered to people with significant cardiovascular or renal disease. Other potential risks would include treatment for people with sodium depletion, dehydration, or debilitation since toxicity is a high possibility. The problem is that Lithobid (Lithium) in conjunction with diuretics can reduce renal clearance of the drug, which increases the levels that leads to the risk of toxicity. Manufactured by Solvay, doctors are reminded that during initial treatment, polyuria, mild thirst, and small hand tremors are possible. Although not often reported, other potential side effects include nausea and general discomfort. These mild effects are usually seen at levels ranging from 1.5 to 2.5mEq./l. although moderate to severe reactions are more common when the dose rises to 2.0 and higher. Keep in mind that even with some potential risk, Lithobid has shown promising results for people with depression. Back to Drug List |
