Loved One With Bipolar Disorder? |
Lamictal
Lamictal, chemically called lamotrigine is a drug used to help control seizures in both children and adults living with epilepsy. In addition to convulsions, Lamictal can be used as a stand-alone medication for convulsions or in conjunction with other types of medication. Depending on the severity of the disorder, doctors will prescribe Lamictal over a period of weeks or months. The key to effectiveness is maintaining a specified level in the bloodstream. Therefore, blood work may or may not be recommended to monitor these levels. In some cases, Lamictal is also prescribed for people with conditions such as Bipolar in treating the effects of depression, as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. The results are that for people who have not responded well to other antidepressants, Lamictal has proven to be beneficial. When taking Lamictal, it is important the initial dosage be low and then increased slowly over several weeks to help lower the risk of rash, which can at times be serious. Lamictal is manufactured in both tablet and chewable dispersible form. For people with Bipolar, Lamictal has shown to be more successful in controlling rapid cycling and mixed states than other drugs such as valproate and carbamazepine. Because of the increased potency for treating depression, most doctors and patients prefer Lamictal to other options. Back to Drug List |
