BuSpar

BuSpar (buspirone hydrochloride) is a drug used primarily for treating anxiety disorders or symptoms of anxiety. Manufactured by Bristol Myers Squibb, buspirone is used primarily for treating mild to moderate nervous and anxiety tension. Administered in tablet form containing 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 30mg, the individual generally will not receive the full benefit for two weeks. Also marketed as Parnate and Nardil, people dealing with mental disorders such as Bipolar greatly benefit. In addition, buspirone has been proven to help ease the anxiety for individuals suffering from alcohol cravings, for people with history of addiction, and the elderly. This psychotropic drug is developed with anxiolytic properties that provide a calming effect.

In numerous studies performed whereby people were given buspirone and a placebo, buspirone demonstrated a marked improvement over the placebo. When being considered for this medication, it is important to consider that buspirone coupled with a MAO inhibitor has shown some cases of elevated blood pressure. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends this medication not be given with a MAO inhibitor. In addition, buspirone does create the possibility of both acute and chronic changes relating to mediated neurological function such as dystonia, tardive dyskinesia, akathisia, and pseudo-parkinsonism due to the binding to the central dopaminergic receptors.

In most cases, people with anxiety problems have received great benefit from taking buspirone. However, slight risk of side effects do exist, which includes dizziness, headache, fatigue, decreased level of concentration, confusion, dry mouth, nightmares, anger, insomnia, nervousness, and drowsiness. On a much lower scale, some people have experienced intolerance to noise, feeling of euphoria, hallucinations, seizures, fear, lack of interest, slurred speech, psychosis, and claustrophobia but again, these incidences are very rare.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Police say a woman has abandoned her 18-year-old daughter at a hospital, saying she can't control the girl, in what may be the latest use of Nebraska's unique safe-haven law. The woman told officials at BryanLGH Medical Center West that her daughter, who was adopted, is bipolar and has a learning disability, Assistant Police Chief Jim Peschong said today.
