Young Scot: Suzy helps others along road to recovery.

Daily Record (Glasgow, Scotland); 1/20/2005

AS a 17-year-old university student, Suzy Johnston developed the initial symptoms of depression.

Her condition developed into manic depression/bipolar affective disorder.

While working with the Education Team of the Renfrewshire Association for Mental Health, giving talks to school pupils and social workers, Suzy started writing about having mental illness and this led to the writing of her autobiography, The Naked Bird Watcher, which was published in the Spring of 2003.

Now Suzy writes, advises, promotes and publishes on mental health awareness issues. She says: 'We all have mental health and with one in four of the population requiring medical help with mental distress at some point in their lives and one in 10 teenagers self-harming, the statistics give cause for concern - particularly when it involves subjects that society would prefer us not to discuss. Whether we like it or not - in some form or other - mental illness will touch us all.

'The majority of psychiatric illness or conditions are likely to occur between the ages of 15 and 25, so it seems reasonable to make mental health education more accessible for this age group.'

One of the Suzy's reasons for writing her book was to target this age group and give an insight and understanding into mental distress. However, the positive message of the book - that good psychiatric care, support and self management are aids to recovery - offers hope and reassurance.

An updated edition of The Naked Bird Watcher is available from The Cairn bookshops and internet book sites.

Book Review: Mind on the Run

The actual name of the book is: Mind on the Run: A Bipolar Chronicle, and chronicle it is, for it chronicles the tragedy that one family endured as one of its members, Scotty, went through five major, prolonged bipolar manic episodes, ending in a suicide that never should have happened.

The book is written by Dottie Pacharis, Scotty's mother, and is told over the course of thirteen years, during which time Scotty was committed 14 times to 11 different hospitals for his manic episodes - escaping from two of them - all along the east coast of the country.

Reading this book, you continually ask yourself, "How could this have happened?" Even as you read the events as they transpired, appalled as, time and time again, Scotty was able to manipulate judges during hearings as he claimed he "is not bipolar, has never been bipolar," and the judges believed him, releasing him without committing him even though he was obviously very ill.
