The type of mental illness in which the patient displays abnormal behavior is called a mental disorder. When the person experiences a depressive episode only, then it is called a unipolar disorder. When the episode occurs between the two poles of depression and mania, it is called bipolar disorder. Thus both unipolar and bipolar disorders are disorders which have varying affects on the patient.

Bipolar disorder, often referred to as manic-depressive disorder strikes the young and old and is a lifelong problem. The mood swings that are seen during the disorder are the extremes which include the highs called “manic” phase and the lows called “depressive” phase. The two different phases are two distinct moods which vary in thought, action, energy and behavior.

Bipolar 2 disorders are more commonly known asBipolar II type of bipolar disorder. There are four known types of bipolar disorder. In Bipolar I, the severity of the mania and depressive moods is more severe than in Bipolar II with the moods varying between mania and depression over a period of time.
