The type of mental illness in which the patient displays abnormal behavior is called a mental disorder.  When the person experiences a depressive episode only, then it is called a unipolar disorder.  When the episode occurs between the two poles of depression and mania, it is called  bipolar disorder. Thus both unipolar and bipolar disorders are disorders which have varying affects on the patient.

Manic depression is known to cause a lot of problems to a large number of people and it can completely disrupt a person’s life. The huge mood swings not only cause trouble to the person but also to the family members of the person. The good thing about this is that it can be treated with the help of medication, therapy and support. However, the main cause of manic depression has yet to be understood. Scientists are of the opinion that several factors which act together cause manic depression. The several factors responsible for the occurrence of manic depression are discussed below.
Bipolar disorder affects a person mentally which can result with severe emotive cycles for a person. Primarily, one has to understand the double or the two different moods associated in this disorder – mania and depression with high contrasts, hence the coinage “bi” and “polar”. There are strong crests as seen in manic mood bipolar symptoms and troughs as seen during depressive mood bipolar symptoms. The distinct bipolar symptom is the nature of the unpredictable mood swing. Also the severity of mood swing is erratic

Bipolar mood disorder is a psychiatric condition which is characterized by extreme mood swings – an abnormal heightened mood referred to as “mania” or a low mood called  depression. Manic phase has a milder moodwhich is  “hypomania” and the other face of depression is a mixed episode which is characterized by both mania and depression. When there is just an alternate manic and depressive phase, it is referred to as rapid cycling.

The mood swings that are seen during the disorder are  the extremes which include the highs called “manic” phase and the lows called “depressive” phase. The two different phases are two distinct moods which vary in thought, action, energy and behavior.
