If your loved one has bipolar disorder, there may be times that they will feel depressed.  You may not know what the right thing to say or do is during those times, and you certainly don't want to make things worse for them.

Following are some suggestions of things to say to encourage your loved one when they are feeling depressed:

  • I love you! (you can never go wrong with this)
  • I care about you and what is happening with you.
  • I'm here if you want to talk about it.
  • You're not alone in this.
  • I'm not going to leave or abandon you.
  • Do you want a hug? (it's good to ask first)
  • I can't fully understand what you are feeling, but I can offer my compassion.
  • I'm sorry you're in so much pain.
  • I have empathy for what you're going through.
  • I'm just going to… but I want you to know that I will be back.
  • If you need a friend, I'm here for you.
  • You are important to me.
  • I can't imagine what it's like for you, but I'm trying.
  • I just can't imagine how hard it is for you.
  • If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.
  • I want to help you.
  • I'm here to support you in any way I can.
  • I know how hard you're trying to get through this.
  • We can do this if we work together.
