Some people with bipolar disorder have lost their jobs because of it.  Some have even been denied unemployment.  At the very least, they are struggling financially, and can't work outside the home because of the limitations that bipolar disorder puts on them, both emotionally and because of the stress.  Some have issues that involve their bipolar disorder that make working outside the home just plain impossible.  Other people, however, have found a way to solve this dilemma – working from home.  Can you work at home?  Let's consider this option. There are several advantages to working at home, but the one most people consider the best is flexibility.  When you work a "regular" job, you have a set schedule with no flexibility in the hours you work; however, when working from home, you set your own hours.  The same amount of work can be accomplished, but during the hours when you are at your best; so flexibility in scheduling is the greatest advantage.Many people with bipolar disorder find that staying home allows them more time to spend with their families.  No more staying late at the office, getting caught in rush hour traffic, having to go into work on your day off, etc.  All of that adds up to time you were taking away from your family.  Imagine the convenience of a home office, where there is no more drive to and from work!Some individuals find it difficult to deal with bipolar disorder and work in an office with people who don't have the disorder.  They grapple with the question of whether to tell their boss and/or co-workers that they have bipolar disorder, for fear of being labeled as "different," or being shunned for having a mental illness.  There is still stigma in the workplace, whether people want to admit it or not.  This added anxiety and stress has made it difficult for many people with bipolar disorder to perform to maximum efficiency at their jobs.Imagine not having to deal with the stigma surrounding bipolar disorder  – not having to deal with the fear of people who don't understand you, or would fear you and your disorder if you did tell them that you have bipolar disorder.  You would no longer have to deal with that anxiety and stress if you were to work from home; it would allow you to perform your job to maximum efficiency.Now imagine not having to answer to your boss.  You can accomplish that by becoming your own boss!  This is how people with bipolar disorder are becoming so successful.  You can use one of your best assets – creativity – and combine it with productivity, the ability to stay at home, flexibility of hours, and some hard work, and there is no limit to what you can accomplish!Can you work at home?  Yes, you can!  Your biggest problem now is deciding which business is right for you.  Start with making a list of your interests and your assets.  Keep in mind, however, that you do want to make money at this business, so also consider what people need and for what products or services they would be willing to pay.For example, if you have a lawnmower and you enjoy mowing the lawn, start a business for "lawn services."  If you enjoy working with older people, consider "elderly care."  If you are good with children, or you find that since you can no longer work outside the home and are now home with your own children, start a "babysitting service."  What about a "dog sitting service?"  Can you be a "professional shopper" for someone else?  Your business is only limited by your creativity and imagination!Your home business does not have to be extravagant, nor does it necessarily have to take a lot of money to begin the begin the company.  Many people have simply started with what they had and have become very successful, in spite of the fact that they have bipolar disorder.  You can work from your own home office and find the same success!Can you work at home?  You certainly can, and still manage your bipolar disorder and the stress that comes with it.  You can work at home and have flexible hours, spending more time with your family.  You can work at home and enjoy financial security.  Working at home can help you feel better about yourself personally and professionally, without letting your bipolar disorder stop you.
