There are various bipolar types present and according to many scientists, a clear consensus on the bipolar types has not yet been reached. The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders says that there are four bipolar types present which fit into the four bipolar types categories. Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, Cyclothymiacs and the Bipolar Disorder NOS (not otherwise specified) are the four categories of bipolar types.

Bipolar 1 is one of the bipolar types which is characterized by both mania and depression. This is a classic form of the illness and also the most intense and severe of the bipolar types. It is generally characterized by the occurrence of at least one mixed episode or one manic episode or state. The people who have been diagnosed with Bipolar 1 have also usually had at least one state of depression. This is not generally required for the diagnosis.

Bipolar 2 is another of the bipolar types which deals with hypomania and depression. Hypomania is a condition where the state of mania or euphoria is not very intense and severe. During this state, the person does not get the same feelings as in euphoria or mania but does have a feeling of optimism and happiness. Generally, states and episodes of mania are not recognized in this type and in this bipolar type, there are recurring stages or episodes of depression and hypomania. To be called as a person suffering from Bipolar 2 disorder, a person should have experienced at least one huge depression episode followed by at least one major hypomania episode. If the person has experienced at least one episode of mania, he will be classified as having Bipolar 1 disorder.

Cyclothymia is a combination of hypomania and mild depression. This is the mildest of the bipolar types and the symptoms are not intense and severe. This also consists of cyclic mood changes and swings. But the emotions are not severe enough and intense enough to be called either mania or depression. To be considered a person suffering from cyclothymia, the person should have experienced several periods and episodes of mild depression and hypomania over a period of two years, at least. Even though this is not very severe, this disorder cannot be overlooked as there are chances of the disorder taking a severe form. Hence, this condition also requires treatment.

Bipolar NOS is another of the bipolar types which is generally called a sub-threshold bipolar disorder. Similar bipolar disorders that cannot be classified under any definite category of bipolar types are generally in this group. Even though it sounds very mild, this kind of disorder also should not be neglected.
