Many of the major disorders currently are unfortunately labeled 'mental' and are, at the most fundamental level, caused by physical dysregulations in the brain.

The label 'mental' implies the opposite-they are the product of character defects and weaknesses which can be overcome if the sufferer really wants to ('Snap out of it, there is no reason for you to be depressed'). This is nonsense.

Abraham Lincoln had two prolonged incapacitating major depressions in his thirties. Was he weak-minded?

The reflex image that the term 'mentally ill' evokes is of an unkempt, violent person shoving someone off a subway platform.

No longer think of yourself as 'mentally ill'. Neuroscience and reason are marching forward and eventually will support this. With time and effort, ignorance and stereotyping will be overcome.
