Words and Phrases That I Hate When Talking About Bipolar

By David Oliver

Shrink
I don't like this word because it actually downplays the importance of the role of the doctor in helping a person with bipolar. Not to mention it demeans a doctor. I prefer doctor, therapist or psychiatrist.

"Just one of her/his moods"
An awful phrase people throw around as an accusation every time someone diagnosed as having bipolar expresses an honest emotion they don't happen to like. For instance, if your sister who has bipolar says she doesn't like the new guy you're dating because he's rude to you, and you decide "she's just having one of her moods," instead of accepting her opinion as valid.

Meds
I don't like this word. I think it minimizes a really important thing. I prefer medication.

Hyped up
I don't like this term because I think it is demeaning. It suggests in my opinion that behavior is not based on a medical problem.

"I am bipolar"
This suggests that you are entirely bipolar. Has anyone ever come up to you and said, "Hi, I am cancer or diabetes?" I prefer someone to say "I have bipolar."

Supporter - Don't Let Yesterday or Tomorrow Ruin Today

I want to start by asking you a question:

Does yesterday help with today when you're dealing with bipolar disorder?

Another question:

Does tomorrow help with today when you're dealing with bipolar disorder?

NO. To both questions.

Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow isn't here yet. The only day you have is today, and the only thing that's important is what you do with it.
