Bipolar Manic Episode Safety Plan
STAY SAFE (however you have to)—stay in your safety zone. Do not be alone, if at all possible (be with someone who is aware of bipolar mania symptoms and can help you control them). Be accountable to someone (who will know you are in an episode, will make sure you take your medication, will help keep you from spending money, etc.). Make sure you take your medication and on schedule, and that you keep appointments with your psychiatrist and therapist. Do not make any major decisions, or even any minor ones (if you can help it). Although you may have grandiose ideas, do not pursue them right now. Avoid using the telephone if possible (you will talk too much, and will most likely forget the conversation anyway). When you can’t sleep, do something constructive with your time, rather than increasing your anxiety by worrying about the fact that you can’t sleep. Do not have ready access to money (including credit/debit cards, checking account, etc.). Avoid the Internet (too easy access to spending—eBay, shopping sites, etc.). Be aware of your impulsiveness—be cautious about what you watch on television late at night (i.e., infomercials). Take care of your needs (grooming, eating, etc.). HALT (never get too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired). Do what you enjoy, but not excessively (read, watch television/movies, garden, etc.) Do what you can to relax and ease your mania (take a bath, listen to soothing music, walk, garden, meditate, etc.). Exercise to walk off excess energy or stress. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary situation, and do not do anything that has permanent consequences.
