Dealing with Bipolar from a Weight Loss Perspective

By David Oliver

Your first thought reading the headline of this article might have been, "What does weight loss have to do with bipolar disorder?"

The simple answer is, "Plenty."

You see, many times bipolar disorder creates a mess. Finances are ruined, you can't find a doctor, the person is in a hospital, there is massive debt, bad credit etc. Often people contact me and they want a magic solution that will fix everything fast.

I should say that in my businesses, I actually teach people how to lose weight and keep it off.

The first thing I always hear from 99.99% of the people after I tell them they can only lose about 2 to 3 pounds a week naturally and healthily, is "That's going to take a long time to lose 40 or 50 pounds."

I say, "Yes it is. You didn't put the weight on in a week, and you won't take it off in a week."

When I ask how long it took them to put on the 30, 40 or 50 pounds, they always end up admitting it took many months or even years to reach their current weight.

Now back to bipolar. The debt that occurred, the bad credit, the disaster you are looking at, didn't happen over night or in a week or month. It was the result of many months and probably YEARS of bad decisions and not having a lot of knowledge about bipolar.

So, when you are trying to fix the current problems with bipolar and prevent the same one from happening again, it's going to take time. Have patience. There is no magic solution. Just like the person who is losing weight and trying to keep it off, there is no "quick fix." It takes time and patience. There are strategies you can use to speed up the process in some areas, but there has been nothing I have found to fix 5, 10, 15, or 30 years of living with bipolar without control and no plan to deal with it in only a few weeks or months.

Don't be a Victim of Pharmacy Errors

CNN Medical News published a story about a woman who was pregnant and filled a prescription for prenatal vitamins at her local Walgreens in St. Louis, Missouri.

Unfortunately, this woman miscarried within a few weeks of taking the drug. Later, she learned that instead of being given a prescription for her prenatal vitamins (Materna), she had instead been given Matulane, which is a chemotherapy drug used to treat Hodgkin's disease, according to a lawsuit filed this month in federal court.

According to the lawsuit, the drug (Matulane) is intended to interfere with cell growth and DNA development.

According to the National Patient Safety Foundation, each year in the United States there are 30 million dispensing errors out of 3 billion prescriptions which occur at outpatient pharmacies. Some errors are minor, and some patients catch them easily; however, other errors can be serious.
