The Big Problem with Consolidating Credit Card Debt
Literally millions of people around the country are swallowed up by debt. With rising costs of living and reduction of jobs and pay, it is easy to understand why debt occurs. The important thing to remember is that while you have an option of consolidating credit card debt, this action is simply a temporary solution to a much larger problem. For people living with Bipolar Disorder, life can be extremely challenging. While there are many ramifications associated with this mental disorder, poor judgment, lack of focus and concentration, and spending sprees are common. Sadly, these individuals will have a manic episode whereby they go out and spend thousands of dollars on" stuff." The problem is that not only do they not need this stuff but they also cannot afford it. Many people believe if a person with Bipolar Disorder has massive credit card debt as the result of spending sprees or from paying for all kinds of legitimate treatment expenses, they can simply consolidate the debt and the problem disappears. Although credit card consolidation does help by reducing or eliminating debt, making it far more manageable, the underlying problem of the spending still exists. Therefore, while the person with Bipolar Disorder would feel relief from being out from all the debt, the problem itself has not been corrected. Interestingly, a person with bipolar might easily consolidate credit card debt and even secure a 0% interest rate for a year or even more. However, eventually that person will go right back to spending, finding that they have the same, if not more debt to pay off. If you have Bipolar Disorder or know of someone who does that struggles with over-the-top spending for "stuff" or treatment and medication needed for the bipolar, you need to concentrate on paying down your debt rather than just consolidating it. It is common to see people trying to delay debt problems by pushing it back further and further into the future or by getting another credit card. Instead, work with a good financial planner or credit card counselor who can create a plan for repayment. By following the structure of this plan, most people will find their debt can be completely paid off in two to four years - all without consolidating anything. The result is getting out of debt while learning how to manage money more effectively. Featured Article:TAKE ACTION!I received an email from a person the other day. She asked me why so many great successful people, leaders, business people, etc. have Bipolar Disorder. I have long had a theory (but I don't have any kind of study to point to which would prove my theory). Here's what I think, though: In order for you to start something, whatever it is: open a daycare center, write a book, build a website, go to college, discover the cure for cancer, create world peace – you have to do something really important. Know what it is? You have to TAKE ACTION! Click here to read the entire article. Featured Article:A Basic Coping Strategy for Survivors of Bipolar DisorderThere are many ways that I’ve tried to cope with having bipolar disorder, as I’m sure you have as well. One of the most basic ways I’ve discovered as a basic coping strategy to deal with bipolar disorder is the Serenity Prayer:
It doesn’t matter whether you are “religious” or not, the prayer still works. |
